2. Empathize with the feelings of factory farmed animals.

3. Identify some laws that protect companion animals (like dogs and cats) and endangered animals, but exclude farmed animals.

4. Identify some key differences in factory farms and family farms.

Time: 50-60 minutes, if measurements are given, 120 minutes if students do the

measuring

Materials: Tape measures; rainforest segment from the video Spaceship Earth: Our

Global Environment

Relevant Subjects: Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies

Math Standards: Numbers and Operations, Geometry and Measurement

WHALE’S STOMACH

Grade: 4 and up

Time: 15-45 minutes

Materials: One plastic garbage bag containing: 1 plastic one-gallon jug and the

remnants of another; 1 trawl net float; 35 feet of nylon rope; 1 large garbage bag; 1

large blob of rubber; 10 small plastic items (e.g., plastic cups, plates, utensils, soda

bottle, clear plastic bag, any other plastic containers)
