Advocacy for 4 year olds

5 May

http://mnmn.org/advocacy/

The Minnesota Montessori Network is attempting to affect policy around Dayton’s Universal Pre-k initiative. We think it’s great that he wants to increase access for low income families to afford education for 4 year olds. Now if he could only look at funding for ages 2-3 as well, that would be great. Our first struggle is to make sure families have a choice so that those who want to choose a 3-6 year old environment in a private Montessori can do so.

So far the plan does not seem to outline what KIND of educational pedagougy will be used for those 4 year olds.

Book Reviews: Why do we Fight? Forgiveness, Enemy Pie, and Amazing Grace!

20 Jul

1. Why Do We Fight? By Niki Walker

A great book for teachers to read and then to teach from. E2 could probably read it on their own.

It teaches that while “conflict may be inevitable but war isn’t”. It could an especially good resource to connect to the Peace Game

2. Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

How do you turn an enemy into a friend? How does one turn those virulent caustic emotions of anger, vengeance, and retribution to those of love? Understanding. And getting to know your enemy can make him into your friend. One boy learns this lesson thanks to some clever instructions from a caring dad.

“It was the perfect summer. That is, until Jeremy Ross moved into the house down the street and became neighborhood enemy number one. Luckily Dad had a surefire way to get rid of enemies: Enemy Pie. But part of the secret recipe is spending an entire day playing with the enemy!

In this funny yet endearing story, one little boy learns an effective recipes for turning your best enemy into your best friend. Accompanied by charming illustrations, Enemy Pie serves up a sweet lesson in the difficulties and ultimate rewards of making new friends.”

3. Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman
” ‘You can be Peter–that’s a boy’s name.’ But Grace kept her hand up.

‘He isn’t black.’ But Grace kept her hand up. ”

Luckily Grace has a Ma and a Nana who believe in her.

“You can be anything you want, Grace, if you put your mind to it.” They tell her in the classic book my Mary Hoffman. There’s also a sequel: Boundless Grace

4. Forgiveness by Cynthia Amoroso

This is part of a series, called “Values to Live By” there are almost 30 books in the series, many by the same author. The text is simple and there is a glossary with terms defined: accident, disappointed, etc.

The content is didactic, not subtle, but it would make a good read aloud so the class all has the same language. Each page has general situations to apply the skill which would make great role plays for Grace and Courtesy.

Published by Child’s World, they have more info on other books on their website, including a biography of Gandhi also entitled “forgiveness” : http://childsworld.com/shop/show/5206
