Hopes and Dreams for the School Year–What is our Cosmic Task?

1 Jul

In Responsive Classroom, we begin the elementary school year by establishing our Hopes and Dreams for the year. By setting attainable goals, we create a REASON for being in the classroom. By beginning with intention and purpose, we invite our students to buying in to our goal of education. We create ownership and responsibility by then using these individual dreams to create a contract of daily responsibility. i.e RULES.

There’s a wealth of info on that on the Responsive Classroom Blog.

Ancestor Energy–Farmer’s Markets

23 Jun

I saw Louis Alemayehu and Ancestor Energy perform poetry and music at the Farmer’s market on Lake street on June 21st. Louis is a trained and licensed teacher who has taught poetry to young people before. I think his group might be a good fit for an artist in residency or even as a visiting expert.

I also think working with a Farmer’s Market in the Summer of Fall might be a good internship experience for elementary students.

Caine’s Arcade

Caine’s Arcade

9-year-old Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. Caine asked people to play, but no one stopped. The entire summer went by, and Caine had yet to have a single customer. Then, on the last day of summer, a filmmaker named Nirvan Mullick stopped to buy a door handle for his car. Nirvan bought a $2 FunPass and became Caine’s first customer.  Then he helped to surprise Caine with lots more customers… What happened next was magic and was captured on film! Watch the movie, and then check out Caine’s Arcade Part 2. If you like it, Share with a friend!”

This is a great example of what happens when young people have a dream and get the right support from the right adult.
