What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

Inviting the Ogre in for tea: A recipe for dealing with Anger, Anxiety, Fear, Depression, and attention in the classroom.

My mentor told me this story. Her son played lots of high school sports but soccer was one of them. He used to have this extaordinary coach. He would tell his players “playing this game is not just about playing the game, it’s about being in control of your mind and body at all times. You need to be mindful at all times. If I see you acting the opposite , mindless, I’ m going to ask you to sit down for awhile.”

So whenever players acted in a mindless way, and / or started physically or verbally sparring with opponents, he would immediately sub them out of the game. regardless of the score.

One time, the opposite team was getting out of hand. They were fouling his players and the game was devolving quickly into something that didn’t quote resemble soccer, or at least coach’s view of it.

The coach blew his whistle and took a time out. He was subbing all of his players out of the game. He walked over to the coach and let him know that he was forfeiting. He took his entire team out for pizza and explained his decision.

“When the game becomes unsafe. When either team is playing out of control, mindlessly, that’s when players get hurt. Your happiness and safety is much more important to me than any score, than any championship. The safety of all humans is more important than ‘winning the game.’ Remember this, next time you find yourself in a difficult decision: You always have a choice. Don’t play their game.”

Many of the players on his team struggled with ADD , ADHD and other phenomena. Still, coach always got the best from his players.
